Bioenergetic Exercise Classes

Bioenergetic exercises originated with bioenergetic analysis. In this type of psychotherapy, the form and expressive movements of the body are as much a focus as the mind. The exercises that developed in this context form a unique way of working with the body. The exercise classes offered by therapists trained with the Massachusetts Society for Bioenergetic Analysis provide a group context in which to learn, practice and enjoy these exercises. Practicing them in a group offers added excitement, energy and support, and allows for experiencing the body in this lively way in the company of others.
The classes themselves are not bioenergetic therapy, nor do they substitute for therapy. Each class leader, however, is trained as a therapist in bioenergetics. Being in bioenergetic therapy is not a requirement for attending classes, but it may be recommended. Cost of classes is kept at a minimum and all are welcome who wish to derive the benefits of this way of working.
Bioenergetic exercises are different from other exercises. In bioenergetics, the emphasis is on being rather than doing, and the exercises and their practice reflect this emphasis. There is no goal to reach, no image to meet, and no technique to master. Even so, there may be preferred ways of doing a given exercise to realize its benefits.

The purpose of the class is to allow each participant the opportunity to work with their body in a safe, respectful environment without expectations or demands. Participants are free to have and to express their feelings in the group in a manner respectful to self and to others. The sincere desire to improve one's own well-being and the intention to concentrate on one's own work is required. While it is very rarely necessary, the class leader may occasionally request a participant to leave.

Here is what may be gained through the exercises:

  • deeper respiration
  • grounding in the feet and legs and a better sense of reality
  • being "in the body"
  • an increase in the feeling of aliveness and the capacity for feeling in general
  • heightened capacity for self-awareness, expression, and containment
  • tension and stress reduction

All of these contribute to a stronger sense of self, self-respect and self possession
Bioenergetic exercise classes are open to anyone.
